Bittersweet Lessons From Lāhainā, Maui

Respecting the Planetary Boundaries & Those of Others

Written after the 2023 Maui Wildfires destroyed Lāhainā, Maui, this paper also serves as a commemoration of the 64th anniversary of Hawaiʻi’s adoption into US statehood (August 21, 2023); the 10-year anniversary of By Mnemosyne’s founder’s fist time in Maui, which occurred several months after By Mnemosyne was established; and as a remembrance of Lāhainā’s, Maui’s, and Hawai’i’s history, which is a part ofUS history as well. It offers an important reflection and many discussion points for industry and society.

An Unsugarcoated History

Exploring the integrated dynamics of industry, society, and planetary boundaries (PB), focusing on key aspects of industry that pertain to the history of Lāhainā and Maui, in addition to general Hawai’ian and US history—from plantations, to the “Dream City” in “Paradise,” to social and environmental nightmares preceding the 2023 Maui Wildfires

“This place is a fire area. Lāhainā is hot, you know that. How many fires we had? How many deaths did we have on the roads? How many accidents did we have on our bypass? We that live there know that is why we’re here to share with you that is not the proper place. It’s not the right place, it’s not the right time.”
